Description

“Drive” — released November 14, 2000 — is Incubus’s acoustic-led breakout single from their third studio album Make Yourself (1999). Credited to Brandon Boyd, Mike Einziger, Chris Kilmore, Alex (Dirk) Katunich and José Pasillas and co-produced with Scott Litt, the 3:52 track pairs fingerpicked guitars and restrained percussion with subtle cello and harmony vocals, marking a melodic turn that broadened the band’s radio appeal. Boyd has described the lyrics as being “about fear… about being driven all your life by it and making decisions from fear,” framing the song as a call to take control of one’s life. “Drive” topped Billboard’s Modern Rock/Alternative chart in March 2001 and reached No. 9 on the Billboard Hot 100 that summer, becoming the band’s biggest mainstream hit and winning Modern Rock Single of the Year at the 2001 Billboard Music Awards. The Phil Harder–directed video used rotoscoped animation inspired by M.C. Escher’s Drawing Hands and helped expand the song’s exposure
