About Samba
Samba is a fast Brazilian dance rhythm in 2/4. Its defining feature is an anticipation — a note landing on the 'and' of beat 2, just before the downbeat of the next bar. This creates a constant forward propulsion, as if the music is always leaning into the next beat. Carnival samba is dense and percussion-heavy; pagode and samba-canção are softer styles with more melodic emphasis.
How to identify it
- 1Fast tempo — usually 160 BPM and above
- 2The anticipation before bar 2 is the key: something lands a 16th before the downbeat
- 3Percussion density is much higher than bossa nova
- 4The surdo (bass drum) plays a call-response pattern on beats 1 and 2
