About Shuffle
Shuffle is the blues version of swing. Like swing, it uses a triplet subdivision — but shuffle typically emphasises beats 1 and 3 more heavily, creating a thicker, more driving feel. The classic shuffle pattern omits the middle triplet and lands only on the first and third of each triplet group, producing the iconic 'shuffle bounce'. It's the engine of the blues and early rock and roll.
How to identify it
- 1Heavier feel than swing — the beat lands with more weight
- 2Classic shuffle: only beats 1 and 3 of each triplet group; middle is silent
- 3Listen for guitar or piano playing the 'bump-ba-bump' bass line pattern
- 4Slower than typical swing at equivalent note values
